Solutions to reduce food waste at home: collaboration from TranscolabPlus

Food waste represents one of the most urgent challenges in the fight against climate change: it is estimated to generate 6% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to FAO data. In this context, BBVA.com has published a comprehensive informative article that addresses ten practical solutions to reduce food waste in the home, with the participation of Manuel Gómez Pallarés, researcher of the TranscolabPlus project and professor of Food Technology at the University of Valladolid.

In his speech, Professor Gómez stressed that “wasting food wastes land, water, energy and other resources that the planet cannot afford“, and emphasized the need to promote individual awareness as a key axis for change.

Among the actions proposed in the article are:

  • Plan weekly shopping and menus.
  • Cooking and serving smaller portions.
  • To use leftovers and practice the “kitchen of use”.
  • Proper food preservation.
  • Understand the difference between best-before date and best-before date.
  • Donate or share surpluses.
  • Compost the unavoidable leftovers.

In addition, digital initiatives such as Ekilu or Olio are mentioned, which help to make better use of what we have at home or redistribute food before it goes to waste.

Transcolab Plus welcomes the fact that this type of content reaches the general public and that the research experience of the project contributes to raising awareness of the urgency of adopting sustainable habits in everyday life.
