The TRANSCOLAB PLUS project arises from the need to give continuity to the successful results of the TRANSCOLAB project, (2nd call POCTEP) whose objective was the promotion of a Sustainable Agri-food Cross-border Collaborative Laboratory.
The creation of a collaborative agenda has laid the foundations for the thematic research network on Innovation in the Cereal Agri-Food Sector. Thanks to this collaborative network, needs and opportunities for improving research and innovation capabilities have been detected, as well as the implementation of advanced technologies in the cereal industry, mainly related to the valorization of by-products and waste from the food sector, leading the sector towards practices based on a greener and more circular economy.
Food waste has increased concern about reducing or reusing it, since one third of the food produced is wasted throughout the chain. There is a lack of information on the distribution and reuse of this waste in the cross-border cooperation area.
Most of the waste is used for digestion or as animal feed, but it would be preferable to reintroduce it into human food. The cereal industries generate a lot of waste, but they also have useful technologies for its transformation. It is necessary to strengthen the transboundary network to develop new techniques and improve business competitiveness through sustainable practices.
